Description

The Edinburgh Singers present a powerful programme of music by MacMillan, Howells, Finzi and Kodaly.

In the 40th year after the Pinochet coup, the concert will begin with Cantos Sagrados, a moving and thought-provoking song cycle about political repression in Latin America.

This masterpiece by Scotland’s greatest composer James MacMillan, sets three poems by Ariel Dorfman and Ana Maria Mendoza; on “the disappeared”, on summary executions, and on the continuing plight of tribal peoples.

The programme will continue with Howells: Take Him, Earth, for Cherishing (an elegy on the assassination of President Kennedy), and Finzi: Lo, The Full, Final Sacrifice, (an anthem to redemptive love, written at the end of the Second World War), concluding with Kodály’s beautiful and inspiring Missa Brevis.
