A towering feature of the Edinburgh landscape, the Granton Gasholder is a reminder of Edinburgh's industrial past and of its future, green ambitions.
The gasholder was officially opened in 1903 to store gas for Edinburgh and was visible from Fife. It was originally intended as one of a row of eight gasholders, but this was the only one built to the original design at 76 metres wide and 46m tall.
As part of the Granton Renovation Project, the B-Listed gasholder's new role is as a state-of-the-art, public park and recreation area. Only the steel frame of the gasholder is being used following removal of the bell and renovation of the frame (see story).
The column guided gasholder was made of riveted rolled steel with 24 vertical posts with finials (each formerly carrying gas flame) divided into 4 tiers by horizontal tie beams and with latticework bracing between them.
