If there is something I love to experience at the theatre, or the cinema for that matter, it’s a good scare. I’ve always wanted to put on a show that would leave the audience trembling after 90 minutes of screaming and nail-biting.
On seeing Museum Of Horror advertised in the Fringe magazine I thought it a perfect opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. Number one, it would be fantastic research to see how to go about setting up and executing a good scare. And number two....well, there’s an entertaining evening to be had!
The premise is a suspiciously familiar one. A group of young people sign up to spend a night in a terrifying and, supposedly, haunted house. Whomever lasts the night will receive a large sum of cash. But will anybody survive this seemingly endlessly night of horror. More importantly, do you care?
Maybe I was suffering a little from Festival dizziness, but I was really expecting to be, at least, entertained by this little outing. But there was really nothing here that inspired any emotion in me what so ever. It is not scary. It is not funny. It is just very, very stupid.
The best that can be said about this little horror show is that the performances are actually okay. The young cast do what they can with the material they are working with but, come the end, they look just as uncomfortable and embarrassed to be there as us.
If you want to see something scary at 10pm at night, head down to the Cowgate and you’ll find many horrific characters down there. Don’t bother with this nonsense. It’s frightening for all the wrong reasons.
