Opening to the sounds of waves lapping on the shore, a single bench half-lit on stage and a lonely figure sitting on the ground, director Max Lindsay has pitched the atmosphere of isolation well in this two-hander. Based on the real life story of an 18th century man, Leendert Hasenbosch, who was exiled to Ascension island as punishment for being gay, writer and performer Dan Hazelwood has developed this play from Hasenbosch’s own diary, found on the island after his death.

Writer and performer Hazelwood gives the audience a real favour of the challenges that came from being gay in the 18th century, and links this with its parallels – and differences - in the 21st century. The story of Hasenbosch is a fascinating exploration of the time period. As a young man who was dealing not only with his sexuality in a time when it was a danger to his life, but also what that meant as the product of a very religious family, there is much to be mined in the material. Bringing in a hallucination or memory of past love, as part of Hasenbosch’s delirium while on the island, is an effective demonstration of the relationships that led to the isolation on Ascension.

Areas where the production could be strengthened are the transitions from past to present, which are a little jarring as, while deliberately surreal, are quite a leap from the straightforward presentation of the historical elements of the play. The date of review was a preview so it is likely these areas will develop and grow during the course of the run. Nonetheless this is a watchable piece which provides an insight into history that is heartfelt and engaging.
