The Land of Beat is a fast-paced hour of powerful Korean traditional drumming with a modern twist, interspersed with Korean folk dances and entertainment, all beautifully lit to great effect. Featuring traditional costume and an impressive array of different musical instruments, the show really gets to the heart of music and has the audience moving to the beat. The large drum that is played at the beginning sets the tone for the power of the music and gets us ready for the whirlwind through the beats. Another drummer with a smaller drum highlights a traditional rhythm that speeds up, getting us ready for the group drumming.

The strength in the performers is very clear – to be able to drum at speed and for such sustained periods requires a great deal of energy. The beat is stirring and the rhythm spot on which is no mean feat. There are many highlights: when three of the drummers keep up the rhythm on 4 different drums, with excellent timing, it is amazing to watch, especially when the drumsticks are viewed in unison. With the ribbon dances, the moves are slick, making beautiful patterns onstage. When it comes to the spinning top, balanced on top of various sticks of longer and longer lengths, the skill and timing is clear.

There is also humour in the show with some cheeky interactions with the audience. We are encouraged to clap along to some of the rhythms, making us part of the onstage action. It is an energetic, stirring show and if you love strong beats, this is absolutely the one for you.
