The Traverse theatre is staging 'scratch' short plays by some of Britain's best writers. Starting at 9.30am, til the 16th and 9am thereafter, this 'theatre for breakfast' - which includes coffee and a roll - is running almost every day throughout the Fringe until the 30th August.

The writers contributing to this innovative event include David Grieg, Chris Hannan, Zinnie Harreie, Rona Munro, Enda Walsh and Simon Stephens who wrote this morning's play called "Heaven".

A thoroughly engaging, humorous play it involves two characters - Kyle and Sean.  Strangers to one another the play opens in an airport with the older character Kyle (played by David Gallacher) castigating Sean (Sandy Grierson) for dropping some litter.

But the play craftily digresses from an obsessive rant about people's attitude today as the characters divulge more of themselves.  We learn that although Sean is going on holiday, perhaps for ever, he has a wife and two children and as the play progresses we are not sure whether he has harmed them.

Simon Stephens is a marvellous writer.  The dialogue is excellent.  Quirky, the story evolves in an engaging, unpredictable way and despite the fact that the scripts were read, both David Gallacher and Sandy Grierson gave great performances.
