Unlike the Loony Dook at South Queensferry, the Portobello or "Porty" Dook has always been a free event that takes place at Portobello's long, sandy beach. Participants meet at the foot of Bath Street, by the Espy and Beach House.
Dook time to be confirmed, but high tide on 1 January 2025 was 3:22pm.
Portobello's Loony Dook is fairly informal, but has become an established New Year's activity with people typically gathering "to have a wee swim in the briney" on New Year's Day.
Participants will be clad in the usual wacky fancy dress outfits, raising funds for their various charities or just daring themselves.
Local businesses come out in support of the gathering with freebies, like Beach Yoga (from 10.30am) and free slices of pizza from Civerinos, as well as the familiar hospitality of yesteryear from nearby businesses, care of The Boathouse, The Portobello Bistro, Miro's, The Espy, The Beach House, and The Dalriada.
