In a world with all its problems, not to mention the busy lives we lead, it was a pleasure to enjoy a beautiful autumnal afternoon of music sung by the innocent voices of The Vienna Boys' Choir. Their audience was treated to a programme of songs varying in choral genre from motets and lieder, to popular songs and ballads.
Smartly turned out in white sailor suit style tunics, black trousers and shiny black shoes, the boys, ranging in age from ten to fourteen, marched on to the stage to sing their first piece – Haydn's Insanae et vanae curae (Mad and Vain Worries), Hob. XXI:1, 13c – this was a rather tentative performance, and at times barely audible as the twenty-five members competed with the powerful Usher Hall's Steinway grand piano.
Boys will be boys... The odd hand over mouth to stifle a cough, scratch of face, ruffle of hair and the occasional fidget nevertheless all added to an endearing performance by this group, who soon relaxed to delivered an exciting vocal programme which demonstrated versatility, humour, musicality, and pure vocal timbre. Moreover, The Usher Hall audience, occupying the stalls and grand circle only, appeared, at first to be quite reserved with their appreciation following each piece - however, hearty applause soon followed as the boys showed off their talent through a cappella, solos and instrumental accompaniments.
The concert culminated in an exciting rendition of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody
