This year’s seasonal yarn at the Brunton is the truly amazing story of... well, there’s this wicked magician and he’s wanting to purloin some sort of a magical lamp he’s heard about which gives you control over the entire universe, and... and... but let me not spoil the plot.
With great gusto and an excellent party atmosphere, this Aladdin gives exactly what we want from panto. Much hokum with Chinese laundrettes, midnight gardens, caves of treasure, genies, mummies and Egyptian crypts. Complete with an evil, single-minded Abanazer, outrageous, long-suffering Widow Twanky, cheeky chappie Wishee Washee, jealous Emperor, droll genie and a gushy tale of true love between gorgeous Aladdin and cute Princess Lotus Blossom, what else could any one need?
Abounding with jokes aplenty straight from the cracker, all in all the usual excuse for a rare tare. Fun, informal, camped up, dumbed down and great for the kids. Does the business. Musselburgh and East Lothian really has something special with its Brunton Theatre Company and its director! Let's hope the Company's funding, presently under threat, is made securer.
