Motown the Musical To Bring Detroit to Edinburgh

‘Motown the Musical’ is a show packed with 50 songs that we associate with that famous label, as well as recounting the story behind the classic hits.

‘Motown the Musical’ is based on founder Berry Gordy's autobiography in which he tells how with just $800, borrowed from his family, he went from featherweight boxer to heavyweight music mogul.

In the process he discovered and launched the careers of Diana Ross, Michael Jackson, and Stevie Wonder, to mention just a few of the Motown mega stars linked to the label.

Edward Baruwa reprises the leading role of ‘Berry Gordy’ that he performed in the West End.

Charles Randolph-Wright’s production features a live orchestra playing tracks like Isn’t No Mountain High Enough, I’ll Be There, Dancing in the Street, Stop! In The Name Of Love, My Girl and I Heard It through the Grapevine.

Karis Anderson will play ‘Diana Ross’. Karis is best known as being one third of pop band ‘Stooshe’ who celebrated a top five single ‘Black Heart’ in 2012 for which they received a nomination for Best British Single at the 2013 Brit Awards.

Nathan Lewis was a finalist on ITV’s The X Factor in 2016 as part of boy band ‘Five After Midnight’. Nathan makes his stage debut as ‘Smokey Robinson’.

Shak Gabbidon-Williams who has appeared in both ‘The Lion King’ as Young Simba and toured the UK as ‘Seaweed’ in ‘Hairspray’ will play ‘Marvin Gaye’.

The production aims to capture the essence of those iconic artists and provide you with what is a soundtrack to a generation.

"Motown the Musical” received its world premiere in April 2013 in New York and the London production opened on 11 February 2016 and continues to play the Shaftesbury Theatre where it is half-way through its third year and is booking until April 2019.
