Energetic, endearing and full of life, Brooke Alexander is a Moth StorySLAM Champion and a one-woman dynamo. Using direct address, the audience learns the story of her complex, impacted-by-health life, the audience is drawn in to an intense whistlestop tour through the years. Playing to a busy audience, especially for a morning show, Brooke checks in with us, makes sure we are OK and gives us permission to laugh no matter what. There is an explanation of an accident which gives us the first hint of the challenges to come.
Before we move onto the next stage which brings hospital and emergency visits, we meet Doggie, Brooke’s toy dog.… Brooke’s comic timing is on point and her well rhymed take on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air is a joy, especially for those who remember the original. The whole show is peppered with pop culture references which are effective, covering a range of quotes, shows and snippets of songs that should resonate with anyone. This is a raw, open expression of life, lived as best it could be.
Life can be shattered in an instance, and how you respond to that can help you to grow and find a path that works for you. Connection, not giving up: for Brooke this is a complicated, multi-layered path, but she also reminds us that what is important is how you respond to what life throws at you and shine if you can.
Refreshingly honest, disarmingly open: brilliance does indeed shine out with this show. When the poetry flows it is clear how Brooke became a Moth Champion with speedy, nuanced and witty rhymes that again are full of pop culture mentions. If this does not make you want your support network around and to celebrate self, then there is not much that will.
