Annual open days on the Isle of May National Nature Reserve (NNR). The day is free and a privately operated boat service from Anstruther harbour in the East Neuk of Fife has been subsidised by Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) for these special days.
Family-friendly activities include face painting, guided walks and a storyteller. For adults and older children there will be guided tours of the island’s wildlife and history, with an opportunity to get close-up views of the birds and seals through telescopes. Tea, coffee, juice and cakes will be available for all free of charge on both days.
Wildlife is only part of the attraction of this island, the May has a fascinating collection of archaeological sites, shipwrecks and lighthouses. As well as the open days people can visit the island on regular boat services between Easter and 30 September and it is free, although the private boat operators charge for trips to the island.
Open day sailings to the island will be on the privately operated May Princess from Anstruther harbour, leaving at 12 midday on 5 July and 1pm on 6 July.
For the open days only, SNH is subsidising the cost of the boat trip. Tickets for the day must be booked in advance with Scottish Natural Heritage on 01334 654038 and they go fast so locals are advised to book early.
Adults £9.50, concessions £8.50 and children aged 3 to15 years £4.50.
