About the venue

Edinburgh's only permanent ice rink is an Olympic sized, indoor facility offering recreational and competitive skating. The large permanent seated, indoor arena is 200ft (61m) by 97ft (29.5m), and has a seating capacity of 3,800.

The rink has two-hour public skating sessions throughout the week (one or two per day) with disco sessions on Friday and Saturday nights.

The rink is home to local ice hockey team the Edinburgh Capitals. As well as ice skating sports, like ice hockey, individual and team skating competitions, and curling, the historic Murrayfield ice rink has hosted everything from bike polo on the unfrozen rink to Fringe performances by Quebecois ice dance group Le Patin Libre . The facility also offers skating lessons.

The category B listed building was designed in the art deco style by architects J B Dunn and G L Martin in 1938-39.  Until Covid-19 struck in March 2020, Murrayfield ice rink operated continuously since 1957 under private ownership.

It was closed for two and a half years, due to the pandemic, but re-opened under new management, on 28th October 2022. During the rink's closure, the cafe was renovated, a new light rig and sound system was installed, and the pipes beneath the ice were cleaned, replaced or repaired.

The venue is available for private hire.
