About the venue

J.D. Weatherspoon owned pub in attractive, Grade A listed Georgian building (the title is named after its original use as a bank for the Union Bank of Scotland). Reasonably priced food and beer, central location and New Town, neo-classical grandeur of the interior means the bar gets mobbed quickly, especially after office hours and during big sporting events such as rugby matches. So be prepared to stand a while before getting in your order.

The bar hosts free comedy shows as part of the Free Fringe in August.

The building was designed between
1874–1878, by Fettes College architect David Bryce, and completed by
his nephew John.
