About the venue

There's a constant flow of jazz and jazz-orientated music such as acid jazz, funk-rock, and reggae, from local and touring musicians in this purpose-designed jazz venue and basement bar in an old c1860 building.

The weekly programme of music includes two gigs each night and Saturday afternoon jazz, as well as a complement of DJs and poetry thrown in.

Cover charge applies for many of the evening acts, but there's free admission for some slots and the added enticement of drinks specials and free wifi access for wired punters during off-peak hours.

The bar is open 7 days a week until 3am.

Background

The much-loved music venue was originally opened in 2005 by jazz drummer Bill Kyle, but had a near death experience due to the cost-of-living crisis when it announced it had to close on 10th April 2024. It came back from the brink, re-opening on 1 July 2024 as a Community Interest Company (CIC) under management of husband and wife team Nick and Justyna Mushlin both with deep connections to the Jazz Bar and with guiding support from the Music Venue Trust (MVT).

As the Jazz Bar Edinburgh CIC, the legacy that the old Jazz Bar had created and nurtured for many years, lives on as a non-profit social enterprise concern, with the Jazz Bar's assets, name, and license owned by the community. The venue also benefits from a 75% rebate on business rates and VAT exemption on ticket sales.
