Edinburgh's publicly-funded arthouse cinema is a hub for the city's film buffs. The Filmhouse has the most varied programme of alternative film, ranging from arthouse and foreign cinema, to classics and mainstream second-run films.
The Filmhouse is closed, after its parent organisation the Centre for Moving Image, announced that it had ceased trading on 6th October 2022. However, it could re-open as soon as October 2024.
Its Lothian Road location, puts it close to the Edinburgh Odeon, Cineworld, and Edinburgh Cameo Cinema.
It is also the location of the Central Box Office for the annual Edinburgh Film Festival, with other off-beat mini film fests thrown in throughout the year.
The café is a relaxed place to hang out for a coffee or pint (fairly good choice of beer on tap), and offers reasonable pre-film food, including vegetarian.
