The National Trust for Scotland’s Bannockburn Heritage Centre opens for visitors on 1 March 2012 for its final season. The centre marks the site of Robert the Bruce's resounding victory over a larger English army in 1314.
The 1960s building is being replaced by a brand new visitor centre. It will have a final season until 31 October, before being demolished.
Construction for the new visitor centre, supported by the Scottish Government and the Heritage Lottery Fund, is set to start in mid-2012.
In 2013, there will be temporary visitor facilities onsite and the Bannockburn team will carry out an education outreach programme.
The centre is due to open in 2014 to coincide with the 700th anniversary of the Battle of Bannockburn.
Property Manager Scott McMaster said the season this year will include a series of living history events from ‘strictly swashbuckling’ to academic talks.
“We’ll also be looking ahead to the amazing new facilities we’ll have onsite from 2014 – it’s going to be a whole new era for Bannockburn and visitors will be blown away,” he said.
