Running time
50mins

Most people will remember the Blues Brothers from the eponymous 1980 film and fans will have longed to do two things.  Attend a Blues Brothers gig and throw their car's cigarette lighter out the window.

You are invited to join the party as the Blues Brothers Live roar through an hour of rock and blues classics loosely stitched together with lines from the film (remember this is music not theatre).  Bradley Jayden and David Brodie make a reasonable, if sometimes a little harsh, Jake and Elwood. The film is older than the band - not necessarily a problem as they are reasonably tight - but they look like a nervous school orchestra.  It takes 20 minutes of the set before they crack a smile.  The staging might be better if some members of the bar were less centre stage.

In comparison Jaygann Ayeh oozes confidence as Ray Charles and Cab Calloway.  Helen Hart also does a good job in bringing down the pace as a solo Stax Sister.

And party they did with an enthusiastic crowd being invited onto the stage every ten minutes.  Which is probably too much as the remaining audience is unlikely to be impressed by paying for an impromptu uncoordinated dance show by their peers.

Just as it was all kicking off it was over - 30 minutes in.  I am told that there are two numbers to be added and that the running time will then be 50 minutes.

If you feel you are on a mission from God, go see the show later in the run.  Or buy the DVD of the film and throw the lighter out the window.

Times: 5-31 August, 11.25pm.
