International Women's Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women across the spectrum. In 2017, the theme of the annual day is "Be Bold For Change", to step up the movement toward gender parity.

A variety of events are held today in Edinburgh, including a free lecture series at Heriot Watt University and another series of talks and performances by women in the arts.

The University of Edinburgh has held an annual lecture series given by 'inspiring women speakers' of international reputation since 2010.

Dr Catherine Calderwood, Scottish Government - Chief Medical Officer is this year's speaker.
