Historic Scotland's rangers are inviting locals to come along to the annual Holyrood Park Dog Show and Fun Day. The family day out, taking place on the fields beside the Palace of Holyroodhouse, features games and competitions for all dog lovers.
There will be a chance to enter pets into classes for ‘Waggiest Tail' and ‘Best Junior Handler'. There's an agility class with a rosette for every mutt that enters, and those professional hounds of The Dogs Trust will be demonstrating a rescue dog agility display at 12.30pm.
Track down Spot the high-tech way
As in previous years, the PDSA animal veterinary charity will be attending with their mobile unit providing free health checks for dogs and in conjunction with Dogs Trust they will be offering a "bargain price" microchipping service. The SPCA will also be at the dog day.
"There are classes that puppies and older dogs can join in, so everyone can get involved. It's a nice reminder too that Holyrood Park is a fantastic space for walks, with nature and history all rolled into one," says Nicky Pettigrew, Holyrood Park Ranger.
Fun day activities
There will also be a series of lively sports activities on the day for all ages, with fun events including tossing a volcanic rock, a three-legged gull race, and a frog-hopper bouncing race.
Other entertainments include the opportunity to take part in an art workshop with Holyrood Park’s artist in residence, and to solve a wildlife crime mystery with the Park Rangers. The Rangers team will also be explaining how to enjoy outdoor spaces in a fun and responsible way.
Crews of the Emergency Services will let you explore their vehicles, climb aboard a fire engine, see yourself on CCTV, and step inside an ambulance.
