Following the success of its 2009 premiere of Shadow Aspect by British composer Judith Bingham, the Edinburgh Royal Choral Union is delighted to be giving this ‘quintessentially Edinburgh’ piece a second outing at a concert in St Cuthbert’s Parish Church, Lothian Road, on Saturday 20th November 2010.
Commissioned to mark Ercu’s 150th anniversary, Shadow Aspect takes the poems, texts and meditations of Robert Louis Stevenson as its inspiration to create a powerful new narrative, played out against the twin backdrops of Edinburgh’s Old Town at night and a Stevenson lighthouse at the height of a storm. The work draws on the combined forces of Ercu and the edinburgh youth choir, alongside a distinguished trio of soloists.
Timpanist Philip Hague’s virtuoso recreation of a storm during Shadow Aspect’s first performance so impressed Judith Bingham that she has composed a new piece for him, Annunciation III, which he will premiere at November’s concert.
Works by French composer Maurice Durufle complete the programme – his magnificent Requiem and Quatre Motets.
