Description

Following the inaugural Edinburgh Pipe Band Championships last year, the competition moves from July to join Edinburgh's festivals in August. It remains at the Royal Highland Centre in Ingliston.

Organisers hope to attract similar numbers to last year: just under 40 band performers and more than 3,000 visitors

The first major piping contest held in Edinburgh for 15 years culminated in a grand finale with competing pipers and drummers taking part in the march past, saluting Chieftain, Ian Embelton, Chief Executive of the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association.

Defending last year’s title, The Boghall and Bathgate Caledonia Pipe Band led by Pipe Major Ross Walker, will once again be facing stiff competition from across Scotland as Grampian Police, Scottish Borders, Inveraray and District Pipe Band, and Central Scotland Police will all be piping for the 2012 title.

More Highland dancers are expected to attend this year, as the organisers build on last year’s numbers, which saw 120 dancers compete.

Last year’s visitor favourite, the heavies will once again be participating in a mini Highland Games event as they toss the caber, shot put and hammer throw.

Additional entertainment includes a bouncy castle, face painting, shopping area, Scottish crafts and food and drinks arena.
