Beam Theatre is a brand new Edinburgh amateur theatre company. With an ethos of collaboration, this creative outlet is designed for team spirited members who want to produce high-quality theatre in a non-professional capacity.
Their inaugural production I Hate Hamlet by Paul Rudnick is both a comedy and a ghost story that explores the age old debate of art versus fame.
The play’s hero Andrew has left the warm LA sunshine (and a part in a soap opera) to try his hand at being a "real" actor in New York. He is cast in Shakespeare in the Park, but isn't sure if he wants to take it on. Convinced by several people to conduct a séance, Andrew unwittingly summons the ghost of legendary Shakespearean actor, John Barrymore. It is Barrymore’s quest to help Andrew find the gumption and skill to take on Hamlet, “the greatest play in the English speaking world”. However, Andrew’s Hollywood obsessed friend Gary would rather he star in his own network TV show. Will Andrew choose Fame or Glory?
Director Andra Roston comments, “… [this is] a fast paced show with some great one liners, a sword fight and tights! We thought it would be the perfect pick me up for audiences in the depths of an Edinburgh winter.”
