The talent begins with the first musical number of the night ‘Science Fiction, Double Feature Picture Show’ sung by the usherette, played by Natasha Hoeberigs, who performs dual roles as Magenta the maid.
As the curtains unveil, there is an atmosphere of excitement from first-timers and dedicated returning attendees. The Narrator (Nathan Calton) steps onto the stage showcasing his undeniable quick wit as he entertains the audience’s humorous and risqué callouts. In any other musical, this behaviour from the audience may be frowned upon, but at the Rocky Horror Picture Show, the bolder the better.
While Brad and Janet (Connor Carson, Lauren Chia) are travelling along the road their car breaks down late at night. They make their way along a dark path, leading them to a large gothic castle, or as they called it the Frankenstein Place. As the couple enter castle, they meet the wild and wonderful characters that live there. The cast and ensemble perform the iconic ‘Let’s do the time warp again’ number which cannot be faulted, the choreography (by Nathan M. Wright) is perfectly timed, and filled with energy.
Finally, the wait for the introduction to Frank-N-Furter (Jason Donovan) is over. He emerges confidently in lingerie, prompting the audience to break out into cheers and whoops. He sings what might just be the song of the evening, ‘Sweet Transvestite’, and does what Frank does best – woo’s and captivates his company with his quirky charm.
As the show continues, the stiffness of Brad and Janet begins to wear off and they slowly start to resemble one of Frank-N-Furter’s castle's many occupants, Frank’s creation Rocky is born and most importantly, the production continues to produce endless talent from every character.
Jason Donovan boasts his gifted vocals and becomes unrecognisable as he embodies the charismatic yet unpredictable persona of Frank-N-Furter, all while creating a no-judgment, no-shame space.
Whether it comes down to their singing, dancing or acting, The Rocky Horror Picture Show has perfected their cast
