Based on the true story of Korea’s youngest King Danjong who was crowned at age 12, dethroned at 15 and dead at age 17, this is a brief musical exploration of his short life. Three cheeky goblins, known as dokkaebi in Korean, guide us through the story as they ultimately become his protectors after death. Playing in the background are beautiful images, complemented by the live onstage music, powerful drumming. While everything is sung and spoken in Korean, there are supertitles in English which help us to understand what is being said and sung onstage.

The traditional costumes are beautiful and help set the scene for the time period. The vocal quality of the performers is excellent: the songs are haunting and heartfelt, and the young King and Queen Jeongsun are striking when they sing together. The sadness of the We learn of the young King’s uncle who wants the throne and plots to poison him. The uncle is suitably fiendish in his performance and it is clear that the young King will not escape him no matter what.

The three goblins jump around and help us keep on track. The whole cast works very well as an ensemble and are musically strong, drawing us in with the songs. There is a final message of remembrance at the end but also of hope. A great deal is crammed into the hour and it’s an interesting glimpse into a part of Korean history.
