The Russian State Ballet of Siberia's production of Sleeping Beauty is all one would wish for in a classical ballet. Set in the traditional period, the variety of costumes are resplendent - flamboyant sequined ball-gowns, multi-coloured feathered hats, pastel-shaded tutus, which looked as pretty as a picture, vibrant coloured sentry outfits, and magnificent cloaks worn by the King and Queen and the evil witch - all of which created a magical setting for the well-known fairytale, where good surpasses evil.
Cast in two acts and using conventional choreography, the precision of the corps de ballet dancers was excellent. Anna Aulle, as Princess Aurora, gave a marvellous solo performance in the first Act; the athleticism of Kirill Litvinenko as Prince Desire was wonderful; Anastasia Koreshnikova made a great decrepid, evil witch hobbling on her stick and flourishing the huge drapes of her cloak to intimidate all around her.
The set is simple, but effective. The company are performing in a great number of places throughout Britain until the 22nd of March and it must be quite a challenge for all involved in the production to adapt to continuing new environments.
The dancers, particularly the soloists, have to adapt to a variety of stage sizes. Stage managers have to be able to modify the set to suit new environments and the technical staff have to familiarise themselves with a variety of sound and lighting boxes. It was all however, managed superbly.
Tchaikovsky's music was performed well by the orchestra. In particular, the leader, Antonina Rogatkina, played the solo violin parts superbly. With humour interspersed throughout, the dancers sparkled with confidence and gave an engaging, thoroughly entertaining rendition of this familiar classical ballet.
