The 2009 Meadows Festival is set to go ahead on Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 June. The City of Edinburgh Council has now granted permission for south Edinburgh's community festival to be held on the Meadows.

The first annual Meadows Festival was held in 1974, and the event is now reestablishing itself after a gap between 2005 and 2008. There had been fears that the Meadows Festival would succumb to the credit crunch, particularly after the news, earlier this month, that the Fringe had cancelled Fringe Sunday due to lack of sponsorship.

As in previous years the festival will include music on two stages, nearly 100 stalls, a primary school football competition, an art tent from the Edinburgh College of Art and Taylor's funfair. The Forest Cafe is providing music and a beer tent.

The Festival will run from 10am to 5pm on Saturday 6 June and 11am to 5pm on Sunday 7 June in the West Meadows between Coronation Walk and Middle Meadow Walk.

The Meadows Festival Association has been busy making preparations for the event and has now put out an appeal for volunteers to help over the weekend of the Festival.

"We have a fantastic line up" said Meadows Festival Association Convenor Fred Mackintosh "Interest from all across the community has been fantastic, but we now need people to come forward to volunteer to act as stewards, litter-pickers and to help with setting up on Friday 5 June. You can find us on Facebook, Myspace and on our new website at www.meadowsfestival.org.uk."
