The Edinburgh International Film Festival has announced that Coralie Fargeat’s horror The Substance, starring Demi Moore, will close the EIFF's new Midnight Madness strand on 20th August.

The Substance, which stars Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, is a body horror that doubles as a satire on female body standards and the toxic beauty myth.

EIFF Director, Paul Ridd called the Substance, Coralie Farggeat's second feature, "wildly entertaining".

"Hard to describe this masterpiece, but if we said that it somehow fuses David Cronenberg, Brian Yuzna and Sunset Boulevard into a completely unique, sensory attack on hypocrisy and sexism, then that would only go half-way to describing the wild thrills that await the willing and the eager," said Ridd.

The Opening Night film will be Nora Fingscheidt's Orkney-set The Outrun, starring Saoirse Ronan, an adaptation of Amy Liptrot’s best-selling memoir.

As well as a screen version, The Outrun is also showing this August in a stage adaptation by Stef Smith and director Vicky Featherstone, produced by Edinburgh's Lyceum Theatre. It's part of the Edinburgh International Festival.
