The Beyond Broadway Experience in Edinburgh offers excellent theatre training and performance opportunities for talented teenagers around Scotland. Open auditions for this summer’s production, “Bring It On – The Musical” attracted over 350 aspiring actors, singers and dancers from which 140 youngsters were selected to perform the show at the King’s Theatre this weekend.
The Musical is based on the comedy movie starring Kirsten Dunst (2000) about a champion high school cheerleading squad which discovers its previous captain stole their best routines from another school as they prepare to take part in the next competition.
Like many hit films … Legally Blonde, Singing in the Rain, Mary Poppins … “Bring It On” was later adapted as a stage musical and had its New York premiere in August 2012. Making her Broadway debut was 21 year old Taylor Louderman as head cheerleader, Campbell David, for which she was nominated a Fred Astaire award.
Taylor has enjoyed a fast track stage career, starring in Annie aged 10, and recently, while still a University student, won the role of Margot in “Legally Blonde” at the Muny Theatre, St. Louis. The great news is that Taylor Louderman has travelled to Edinburgh to be a Creative Consultant working with the Managing Director of Beyond Broadway Experience, Drew Gowland:
“Our cast of brilliant young performers have the opportunity to work with a Broadway star as they prepare to provide great music, breathtaking dancing and awesome cheerleading routines throughout the show”
Ms Louderman explains that when she heard about this new production - the Scottish premiere - of “Bring It On – the Musical,” she wanted to be involved and with no hesitation has taken a seven hour transatlanic flight to join the production team this summer. She is clearly impressed by the cast.
“They bring such an amazing level of professional expertise and sense-of-fun. Watching such an incredible group of young people give all their energy and talent to bring it alive has been a joy - being a part of their journey has been my absolute pleasure.”
The familiar narrative of American High School life sounds like your typical feel good romantic comedy about friendships and sporting rivalry, all linked together with a lively score and catchy songs such as, What I was Born to Do, Killer Instinct and the heartfelt, One Perfect Moment.
With school holidays in full swing, “Bring It On - The Musical” is ideal fun, family entertainment before the Edinburgh Festival season kicks off. And for young budding musical stars, take a diary note that the Beyond Broadway Experience will be running its summer theatre programme again next year with a production of the musical “Fame”.
