In this wonderfully rich and evocative play by Carole Levine, we meet Elizabeth I in her later years. Weaving in Elizabeth’s own letters, Shakespeare, Robert Dudley’s own words and a host of other well know names of the time, Levine has created a play that is densely packed with history, but sensitively written. This insight into the mind of Elizabeth, reflecting on her past, is funny, fascinating and ultimately poignant.

Performed with a mastery of language by actor Tammy Meneghini, we are drawn into Elizabeth’s musing about her past life, particularly the mistakes and decisions she had made. Meneghini is a powerful presence as Elizabeth, with her gravelly commanding voice. This is a queen who has strength but also vulnerability: she has more of a heart than her outer demeanour would imply.

Lynn Nichols’ direction means that the journey Elizabeth goes on in taking us through the story of her life, is beautifully nuanced. It is neither forced, nor overly precise: the movement feels pacey without being unnecessary. The Shakespearean speeches in particularly are delicately subtle and emotionally engaging, drawing us in. We feel the regrets that Elizabeth lives with: there is pain behind her decisions.

A special note of appreciation should go to the costumes supervisor who has created an exquisitely detailed costume, which is outstanding. A standout show that you should try and catch while you can – you will not be disappointed.
