Bringing together snippets of an amazing 250 songs from the eighties, Torrey Shine has created a cleverly written musical piece. With her bright pink headband and skirt, Shine is in best eighties gear, not only reflecting the look of the time, but also in keeping with now and its current resurgence of eighties-inspired clothing. The songs are infectious: when the audience hears a familiar line, they will either find themselves wanting to complete the lyric or sing along.
On the day of review there were definitely heated discussions going on about what the songs were, but with 250 to get through there is no way to identify them right away. However, Shine has created a Spotify playlist which will help anyone who absolutely has to know which songs did (and did not) appear. Shine has a powerful voice and is an engaging performer. The room is packed and the audience appreciative. The storyline is typical of an eighties movie plot about a young girl’s life growing up and falling in love. What is not quite as successful is that with such a range of songs to cram in, and the close adherence to the tune for each, means that it can seem a little disjointed at times, or there is simply a beat too long between the song changes, meaning that the fluidity is not there. It may be that less songs but more of the same song’s lines, could smooth those transitions. Nonetheless, this is an entertaining blast from the past and Torrey Shine has created a great concept in bringing together song lines to tell a new story, a fun show to pick you up.
