Based on the short story by M R James, Casting the Runes by Box Tale Soup is a delightfully spooky tale, atmospherically presented with clever use of sound, props and movement. The set design is excellent and adapts beautifully as the props are moved and used in different ways to represent spaces and items. The light up lamp posts are wonderful at adding to the moodiness of the tale. Director Adam Lenson has created a wonderful atmosphere with the piece, complemented by the sounds and music created by Dan Melrose.

Performers/writers Antonia Christophers and Noel Byrne are skilled performers, moving with ease between characters, puppetry and through the dance-like ethereal set and scene changes. The rich tones of their voices lend themselves well to this piece: it is an older world, and other-worldly, and the sound of words that reflect the time period in which this is set, is absolutely key to the success of placing us in that era. The puppetry in particular is exquisite with the puppet faces being uncannily expressive, no matter which angle you see them at.

The pace of the storytelling is wonderfully timed: it is neither static nor too quick, but instead adapts to the moments being told on stage: the suspense build up is well-timed. This is not easy to do, but Box Tale Soup’s experience in performance is clearly to the fore in this production. There are some moments where the show is almost too theatrical in its execution, but this is a small niggle for what is a fitting homage to the supernatural genre.

Box Tales Soup also perform Gulliver’s Travels at the same venue.
