David Morgan took the stage at Just the Tonic at the Tron, wearing skinny jeans, a Mickey Mouse t-shirt and thick-rimmed black glasses. Energy and a clear love of what he is doing exuded from Morgan, it just felt a bit sad that he wasn’t as attention grabbing as I hoped he would be.
Discussing with the amiable audience, why he is a number of Triple Threats, his tales followed him from being a young man in musical theatre through school and beyond. As an audience member who wanted to laugh and enjoy the ride, I felt that I couldn’t. Today, many stand ups use an identifier to hit the audience, Morgan’s is that he is gay and is clearly not bothered who knows, but I just couldn’t seem to warm to his style of humour or even care.
Morgan is an example of why stand up comedy is subjective and caters so well to a number of people’s tastes and ideas. Whereas I didn’t laugh, this didn’t deter the rest of the crowd and it was interesting to watch them, watching him and what seemed to be essentially a stream of consciousness that needed to slow down. His show, meaning to be an hour, only lasted for 40 minutes as he admitted to talking too fast.
If you are looking for a quick fast of comedy, this is a safe bet for you, but if you are after something more textured and thought provoking, scan the brochure again and head to the Gilded Balloon to Scott Capurro.
