Stepping into the world of Swamplesque is the perfect idea if you are in the mood for an excentric night out, filled with laughter.

Before the show begins the audience are already amused by an Australian voice-over, announcing light-hearted warnings that if you do not follow, will result in you being ‘exiled to the swamp’, such as not tagging the cast in pictures on social media.

The curtains open and the famous Shrek appears on stage, the room is notably filled with excitement and anticipation as he breaks into a burlesque dance, encouraging the audience to cheer him on.

The show is undeniably creative as every character mentioned, big or small gets their moment to shine on stage, resulting in hilarious pairings of music and extravagant choreography, including Lord Farquaad showing off their skills with whips.

The only fault in the production was that at times it appeared to be losing the audience, as some sets seemed slightly too long and repetitive. However, this may have been to allow time for behind-the-scenes preparation for the next performance.

Unexpectedly, a notable and definite crowd favourite was the character ‘Mirror on the Wall’ who impressively danced around the stage in roller skates and fabulous outfits. They had the audience audibly disappointed when they left the stage, and then erupting into cheers when Mirror on the Wall reappeared in different scenes.

Swamplesque is a performance for those who appreciate drag, dance and theatre all rolled into one. You probably won’t look at Shrek the same way as before, but you won't be mad about it.
