Edinburgh woke up to a city in white this morning (see photographs). Travellers had to reschedule plans, traffic delays were common, refuse pick-up stopped, schools and recycling centres were closed, and bus timetables knocked out.
Edinburgh airport closed in the early hours of today. Flights to and from Edinburgh Airport may be subject to delays and cancellations due to the weather as a result. Passengers are being advised to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling to the airport.
Lothian buses reported that at 4.30pm "Virtually all our buses are running to time. However a few services are still experiencing delays."
Edinburgh City council said that it had 26 gritters working through the night, and that they had spread 600 tonnes of salt on city roads. "Our priority now is clear the snow and to make the roads and pavements safer," the council blog explained this afternoon.
With temperatures dropping several degrees below zero tonight snow is turning to ice on roads.
Transport Minister Stewart Stevenson recommended that people "avoid unnecessary journeys which may add to disruption."
Be careful how you go out there.
