The results for the Scottish Region of the European Elections were declared earlier today at the Mercat Cross on the High Street.

Turnout was low as expected and the SNP benefited from the turmoil in Labour ranks winning 29% of the Scottish vote - the first time it has won the highest share of the Euro vote.

It means that the SNP and Labour win 2 seats in the European Parliament and the Tories and Liberal Democrats have a seat each. There are a total 736 MEPs.

The European parliament moved to the centre right with the European People's party likely to retain its dominant position in the parliament.

The economic downturn gave wind to right-wing, nationalist, and anti-immigration parties throughout Europe with the BNP picking up two seats south of the border.

The Greens increased their vote in the U.K., with an increase to 7.3% in Scotland, but did not increase the number of U.K. seats which remains at 2. Across Europe  the Greens gained 8 seats winning 52 in total.
