Edinburgh theatre goers will be familiar with the plush and cosy auditorium of the Lyceum but how many have been behind the scenes? As their contribution to The Lyceum’s 50th year, the Lyceum Youth Theatre invites audiences to a unique site specific experience in the darkest, unseen corners of the building.
Tours on the likes of Doors Open Day offer some backstage insights but on this occasion, audiences will be guided to hidden places where no backstage tour goes in this unique theatrical adventure with a cast of over 60 young people. With live music and lively encounters inspired by The Lyceum’s secret spaces, the hidden voices of youth will provide a unique theatrical adventure full of surprises and some spooky moments!
Lyceum’s Artistic Director Mark Thomson says, “…It is the first youth theatre production ever to run a full week at the Lyceum and celebrates the excellence of our youth theatre as part of our 50th Anniversary season. Audiences will be led round each of the very different spaces where they will encounter different worlds with a penny dreadful feel, all inhabited by young people. Be afraid. Be very afraid!”
The project has been devised by members of the Lyceum Youth Theatre and will be directed by Amanda Gaughan, Christie O’Carroll, the Lyceum’s Artistic Director Mark Thomson and Lyceum Youth Theatre Producer John Glancy who says. “It’s fitting in the Lyceum’s 50th anniversary that the hidden corners of the building-many of which have not been seen for decades- should be trusted to the company’s youngest theatre makers. Hidden will be a once in a generation opportunity to walk in the same hallways as Edinburgh audiences did when the building was first opened in 1883. This is much much more than a tour - it’s a theatrical event which will always be thrilling and sometimes just a little bit chilling.”
Buckle up your brave boots and head down to Grindlay Street this October for some pre guising surprises!
