This is a show for the dreamers amongst us, for those who have ever wondered… what if? A warm and engaging performer, Hyojin Park brings her autobiographical tale to life with verve, charming the audience with her open and honest portrayal of the challenges that came from chasing her own dream, being an actor in New York. Drawing the audience in and encouraging us to take part in cheering her on through the journey from small town South Korea to the big city lights of NYC, Park ensures that those watching feel part of the story.
The story that unfolds is recognisable: of the young actor with the hope of pursing dream acting roles and a less judgemental culture, letting those hopes run free. While what unfolds is not unexpected, the journey that is travelled of language, love, rejection and ultimately acceptance, is also one of hope; for determination to try to challenge forms of discrimination, to be who we are, and accept differences.
Park’s physicality is incredible as she morphs from young Nina to older male acting influences. With little on-stage props, she manages to convey an easily identifiable range of ages, different sexes and body shapes through exceptionally skilful moves and postures: she becomes the sleezy older male actor and the arrogant acting teacher. Nina, the young hopeful, is left far behind when Park embodies the range of people she meets along the way.
If you have ever wondered what it must be like to take that leap of faith and follow the journey of an actor, especially in the complex society of one of the world’s most famous cities, then this show is for you. It is a choice you will not regret.
