A heart-breaking musical about love, life and grief, this show is executed with skilfully nuanced performances from the two-strong cast. Accompanied by a keyboard player, the small team ably keep the audience engaged and entertained. These are extremely talented performers who manage to bring us on a voyage of discovery which, while sad, is also towards the end of its journey, uplifting.
The songs from the show are very well written: the quality of the musical numbers is such that they sound like traditional Hollywood musicals with a slightly modern twist. These songs draw in the audience, with the powerful singing of the performers showcasing their skill. The performers have us in the palm of their hands from the start. When the twosome, who have just been singing about love, go through the trauma of a car crash, it is then all the more shocking. The couple who emerges from the post-car crash era are different, both impacted in different ways by the crash, changed in how they react to each other. When the twist in the tale comes it is genuinely surprising and heart-rending but makes clear the reasons for some of the problems.
What shines through from this production is the power of love, and its impact on the individual when loss happens: grief is a strong emotion but ultimately stems from love. No matter what is done to try and mitigate for grief, the only thing that works is time, the harsh lesson of which is played out on stage. This show will make you think about life and want to hug your loved ones while you can: remember to bring tissues.
