Holmes and Watson have never been more energetic than with Max and Ivan filling their Victorian boots. You can be sure of a thoroughly entertaining hour as the pair take the adventure to Chicago.
There is nothing to distract from the two figures on stage; with neither props nor sound effects, Max and Ivan play a multitude of different characters, impressively adopting accents and switching genders throughout. Hummed harmonies are often put to great use in creating the scene, and as they alternately deliver narrative, the other keeps the illusion upheld with a catchy atmospheric tune.
The adoption of multiple characters is possibly best showcased in a fight between two gangsters and their wenches, where both Max and Ivan each have a man and woman to play and many insults to bawl from different sides of the stage. Somehow they manage to avoid confusion in the chaos, despite the consistent quick pace of the show.
Although the plot is fairly tame, it’s excellent fun to witness an entire cast spring from two very talented young men. They create the illusion of a much bigger show with their diverse performances and excellent choreography.
They’ve made a very professional job of it. This is definitely a must for fans of theatrical comedy.
