Dir Georgi Daneliya, 1963, 73min, Russian with English subtitles.
One of the most cohesive and successful examples of the portmanteau-style episodic dramas to emerge from the Thaw-era Soviet Union, this early film from Georgian director Georgi Daneliya is an entertaining fish-out-of-water tale of a young construction worker (a career-making first leading role for 17-year-old Nikita Mikhalkov) who turns writer and comes to Moscow for the first time after his story is published.
A sort of metropolitan Ballad of a Soldier, he encounters a wide variety of the city's citizens and embarks on a briskly-paced series of adventures and misadventures - all, of course, whilst finding love. The screening will be preceeded with an introduction and followed by a discussion with snacks, tea and coffee provided.
