The Great Recession has been a wakeup call. It unveiled an economy dangerously out of whack: frenzied with consumption, wasteful in its use of energy, more adept at increasing inequity than sharing prosperity, more successful at exacerbating rather than easing divisions between Wall Street and Main Street. Bruce Katz will outline a vision of a rebalanced next economy in the United States—one that is increasingly oriented towards exports, lower carbon, fuelled by innovation, opportunity rich, and led by metropolitan areas—and explore its implications for the U.K. and Scotland.
Professor Bruce J. Katz is a vice president at the Brookings Institution and founding Director of the Brookings Metropolitan Policy Program which aims to provide decision makers in the public, corporate and civic sectors with policy ideas for improving the health and prosperity of cities and metropolitans areas.
