Edinburgh's main public library, directly opposite the National Library of Scotland (copyright library) and just off the Royal Mile, is a useful resource open to all.
Spanning several floors in a historic building, the library space contains books, extensive periodicals, newspapers, and electronic information. The Edinburgh Room has local literature and maps going back many years.
There is also a Music Library which is in a separate building next door to main Central Library building, as you walk away from the Royal Mile, down a flight of stairs.
The Library also has regular small archival exhibitions in the main hallway and stairwell.
Anyone can call the library for information and questions.
In 2022 and 2023, the library underwent a £1.8m building works programme.
