In the week in which the McEwan Hall's fine organ is back in use after a significant restoration Tom Poulson and Calum Robertson began their lunchtime concert with a world premiere. The composer, Christopher Gough who, like the two performers, is a graduate of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland was in the audience. Its title Preamble ensured it was the opening work. There were some great runs for the trumpet to get us attuned whereas the organ part was no doubt deliberately uncomfortably bitty. An interesting composition commissioned by Pistons and Pipes.
Tom Poulson gave us a interesting introduction to the next three works, from Handel and Darmase for trumpet and organ and the third by the Welsh composer William Mathias for organ alone. He then introduced Fišer's Dialog and Lindberg's Andante- Gammal fäbodpsalm från Dalarna telling us that this was the warm up piece used prior to Abba concerts.
It was Calum Robertson's turn to introduce the final slightly wacky work for trumpet and organ by present day composer Naji Hakim who had impressed him at Edinburgh Fringe performances a couple of years ago.
This was a fine lunchtime event by two of the brightest young musicians who go from strength to strength and deserve every encouragement.
