Crown Square, the citadel at the top of the castle. The turreted building is the Royal Palace, which houses the Scottish Crown jewels and the 'Honours of the Kingdom' exhibition.

This is where Mary Queen of Scots gave birth to James VI in 1566.

The courtyard was known as Palace Yard until the discovery of the Scottish Crown Jewels in 1818, when the name was changed.
