Three years after the Edinburgh tradition of Riding of the Marches was reintroduced the event, on Sunday 11th September 2011, will see a female rider join the male Principals at the helm for the first time.
The identity of the first Riding of the Marches "Edinburgh Lass" was recently revealed as Tracy McNaughton (24).
Said Naughton: "I am really looking forward to playing such a high profile part in the Riding of the Marches in 2011. Being the first ever Edinburgh Lass is a real responsibility and a chance to set the standard and showcase the role to other women who would like to take the job on in the future. I can't wait to ride at the front of the cavalcade up the Royal Mile on 11th September. It will be a dream come true."
Councillor Iain Whyte (43), announced as the 2011 Captain Elect, said: " As someone with a keen sense of Edinburgh's history and traditions it will be a real privilege to have the chance to carry the Edinburgh Banner up the Royal Mile. It makes it extra special to me that we finish at the Mercat Cross opposite my workplace at the City Chambers and that I will get the chance to follow those members of the Council from history who have taken part in the Ridings of the past. I look forward to welcoming Edinburgh residents and guests from the rest of Scotland and abroad on the day."
This historical equestrian event's main sponsored is Millers Town & Country. Managing Director Mr Robert Miller said: “The event continues to go from strength to strength and demonstrates the desire of the people of Edinburgh to preserve this important part of the city’s history. We are delighted to be able to facilitate the event again in 2011”.
