Norfolkline, the company that runs Edinburgh's local ferry connector to continental Europe, from Rosyth to Zeebrugge, has been taken over by DFDS. DFDS acquisition of Norfolkline from AP Møller-Maersk was approved by the EU on Thursday 17 June and the acquisition was finally completed today.
Norfolkonline currently runs 3 ferries from each port every week. Ferries depart from Rosyth (near Edinburgh) to Belgium on Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays, and from Zeebrugge (near Bruges) on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.
Crossing time is approximately 20 hours. Norfolkline's ship, the Scottish Viking (pictured), provides a children’s play area, large screen cinema, and ensuite cabins.
Crossing prices start at £80 per person each way based on 2 people travelling by car and sharing a cabin.
"Celebration Fares"
To mark the merger of Norfolkline and DFDS, the company is offering special "celebration fares", on its Rosyth-Zeebrugge and Amsterdam-Newcastle routes whereby you can travel back on a different route to the one you went out on. It does mean that you have to connect from Newcastle rather than Rosyth.
During September and October, the combination routes are from £298 for a car plus four passengers with an inside cabin on both legs. During high season, the combination routes are from £438 car plus 4 with inside cabin on both legs.
Foot passengers fares are from £89 return on the overnight ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam (Ijmuiden) with DFDS Seaways on selected Sunday-Wednesday departures in September, when you book online by 15 August 2010.
