A mock-up, public display tram is to be stationed on Princes Street as work gets underway, this weekend, on laying the tram tracks on Edinburgh's city centre thoroughfare.
The mock-up tram will be deposited outside Jenners department store from around 8am on Sunday 22 February. Members of the public will be able to visit and go inside the mock-up from Monday 23 February until Saturday 14 March.
The Edinburgh tram will be open and staffed from 11-6 each day (7 days a week). At other times, the public will be able to see the exterior as it is in full view from the shop-side pavement of Princes Street.
The 15m mock-up includes the driver's cab and a section of a carriage. The carriage shows different seating and interior options, which are still subject to final design.
The mock-up was produced as part of the contract by the Spanish manufacturer, CAF, for necessary testing and approval by authorities.
Cllr Wheeler, Transport Convenor, City of Edinburgh Council said: "I'm sure that residents and visitors will enjoy being able to get on board and see, touch and experience the modern trams. It really paints a picture of what people have to look forward to. Once up and running in 2011, these environmentally friendly trams will help move about our growing population quickly and efficiently."
