The National Theatre has announced dates of a new production of the Olivier and Tony Award-winning show The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time that will star in its prestigious central role Glasgow born actor Scott Reid.
Reid, who is currently showing his impressive comic acting skills in BBC1’s popular comedy Still Game, as the new character called Methadone Mick, is already well known in theatrical circles for his impressive serious roles on the Scottish stage.
The rest of the cast will comprise Dublin born and Glasgow based Lucianne McEvoy as his teacher Siobhan, Emma Beattie as Judy, Wilmslow and Manchester educated David Michaels as his father Ed, Debra Michaels as Mrs Alexander and Bristol trained Eliza Collings as Mrs Shears.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is adapted from Mark Haddon’s best-selling book by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott and tells the story of 15 year old Christopher Boone. At seven minutes after midnight he stands beside Mrs Shears’ dead dog that’s been speared with a garden fork and Christopher is under suspicion. He records each fact in a book he is writing to solve the mystery of who murdered Wellington. He has an extraordinary brain, and is exceptional at maths while ill-equipped to interpret everyday life. He has never ventured alone beyond the end of his road; he detests being touched and distrusts strangers. His detective work, forbidden by his father, takes him on a frightening journey that upturns his world.
National Theatre producer Kash Bennett said, “We were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic reception from audiences around the UK and Ireland when we toured The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time in 2014-15, playing to almost 400,000, and are delighted to take this beautiful and inventive show to new venues and make a return visits to others in 2017.”
Whilst on this extensive tour, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time will simultaneously continue its run at the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End and is on its first tour of the United States. Its 25 UK city tour begins at the Lowry in Salford on 21 January 2017 with dates at Festival Theatre Edinburgh in February and King’s Theatre Glasgow in August 2017.
