Edinburgh's fourth Community Recyling Centre (CRC) at Sighthill is now fully operational at the city's Bankhead Avenue.
The facility, designed for Edinburgh households, takes an array of materials for reuse, recycling, or environmentally sound disposal: bottles (glass and plastic), paper, packaging, cans, car batteries, engine oil, garden waste, scrap metals, solid wood plus electrical and electronic
goods.
The site also includes a Reuse Cabin, run by the Edinburgh Furniture Initiative, which aims to divert hundreds of tonnes of working household electrical items and furniture from landfill to assist families on lower incomes to furnish their homes.
A feedback board has also been added to the Centre to inform users about how much of each material has been recycled from the site, and this information will be updated quarterly.
Councillor Robert Aldridge, Environment Leader, said: "Our top priority is to prevent waste from ending up as landfill, by reducing the amount of waste we produce and also by increasing the amount of waste recycled in the city. We are on course to achieve our 30% target for 2007/08 and
this is in no small way thanks to residents making use of the Community Recycling Centres."
He added: "The City Council is committed to making Scotland's capital as clean, green and sustainable as possible. We all have our part to play; by making some easy and simple changes to the way we live our lives, such as following the Reduce Reuse Recycle message, using less water or by walking instead of driving, we can all contribute to a greener future for generations to come."
